They had opened at Raffles City basement and one at Great World City.

I'm not sure if there are other stores out there. My wife and I had ate their special miso ramen since the day they opened at the basement of Raffles City. It's actually quite a big bowl with at least 2 large pieces of chashu, seaweed, and a nicely boiled hard-boiled egg with half cooked egg yolk inside. I'm not sure how they did it. But I like the egg a lot.

Since then, we had ate the ramen a couple of times. Both in Raffles City and at Great World. We even brought her mum to eat at Great World to celebrate her mum's birthday. But what I like best is not just the ramen, but the Sapporo beer. It is nicer than the King Fisher!!!

However, recently I went to eat their ramen during lunch time. It was rush hour and I felt that the standard drop a little bit. Maybe it is because of the lunch rush hour. Anyway, I will still recommend anyone who likes to eat ramen.

They are located at both Raffles City basement and Great World City.

Click here to view the photos.

Are you a Hakka?

I'm a Hakka, what about you? This morning, as I was tidying up study room, I saw this newspaper article about Hakka food in Singapore. I have kept this article for many years for the fact that, I'm a Hakka.

This newspaper article appeared in The Business Times, Monday, December 6, 2004.

Here's the list of restaurants that were featured in the newspaper.

Moi KOng Hakka Restaurant. 22 Murray St, Tel" 6221 7758. Damage is about $15/person. Go there and try their Yong TAu Foo, yellow wine steamed chicken, red wine prawn, braised port with mui choy and Hakka fried noodle. It has more than 40 years of heritage.

Plun Village: 16 Jln Leban, Tel: 6458 9005. Damage is about $15/person. Try their salt-baked chicken, yong tau foo, sitr-fried Chinese lettuce, braised pork belly with mui choy and lastly, the Hakka famous Fried abacus.

Chiu's Traditional Hakka Yong Tau Food Pte Ltd. 93 Amoy Street, Tel: 6221 4226. Damage is about $8/person. This is a typical family run business serving Hakka food. According to the newspaper, this is the most authentic Hakka yong tau foo. Not forgetting their Claypot pork knuckle braised with vinegar and dark soya sauce. Lastly, try their Ah Mah and Ah Gong chilli sauce - Ah Gong is spicier and Ah Mah is more sour.

Goldhill Hakka Restaurant: 299A Changi Rd, Tel 6842 4283. Go there and try their yong tau foo.

Steamboat at Bei ShanChuan at Vivocity

This steamboat restaurant is on the 3rd floor of Vivocity. It is at the corner and you won't know there is actually a steamboat in Vivocity. To go to this restaurant, look for Daiso on the 3rd floor. Once you get to Daiso, you will be able to find it. It is behind Daiso, deep deep inside.

BTW, they don't serve pork. So if this is going to hurt you, then please don't go.

Just like any other spicy steamboat, they will have 2 selections for you. And as usual, I will order one chicken soup and one least spicy soup. They have a wide selections of food for you to dump into the soup.

All the food is placed in a central area. So, it is like Tian Tian steamboat. Besides the usual vegetables, meat and other usual stuffs, they also have cakes and ice-cream. Something different from the usual steamboat restaurant. On and off, they will cook something different. I had a small fried drumstick. When was the last time you had something like that for steamboat? So, keep your eyes wide.

As for the sauce, it is so so only. The sauce is very different from Ting Yuan. The sesame sauce is very watery. The green sauce tasted like herb with something else. It is hot too. I'm not too sure if they are trying to cater to the Malay community. If they are, maybe they have make the changes to suit their taste.

As for the soup, it didn't taste as nice as both TianTian and Ting Yuan. It only tasted good after everything was dumped into the soup.

I had sliced thin beef which wasn't very thin when cooked. Sliced chicken, a bit of hot dog, vegetables and other usual stuffs lah.

Lastly, our table has a good view of Sentosa. Not too bad though.

Verdict:

Soup base: So so only. It tasted good after we dump everything in.

Selection: Wide selection. They have cakes and ice-cream too.

Environment: They have air-con and you definitely won't sweat.

Service: Lousy lah. Even though they have a lot of boys around. They just stand around only. They didn't clear our plates when it was piling up.

Sauce for dipping: Lousy.

Price: Cheap. $13.90 per person. No charges for soup base.

Will I go again? I will if I need to bring people a lot of people. At least, they can a arrange table for you to accommodate your needs. Both Tian Tian and TingYuan may not able to do that. Not only that, if your friends are the type who can't stand sweating, then bring them to this place to eat.

Here's the link to view the photos: http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/kennyleow3/BeiShanChuanSpicySteamboatBuffet

Steamboat at Ting Yuan Hot Pot Buffet

Are you a steamboat fan? If you are, then you are alone... Because, I am too. Most Singaporean is. In fact, it is pretty shiok to eat steamboat in a very hot and humid weather. Cannot comprehend why? Me either? haha

My wife and I love to eat at Ting Yuan Hot Pot Buffet. It is located near Bugis junction. They are not too expensive and the lady boss is quite friendly. However, this place is always packed and you really need to go early to grab a table.

They are not the cheapest around, neither they are the most expensive. At Liang Seah street, you can get the cheapest at about $12 near the beach road.

You can make your own dipping sauce. It is a mixture of thick sesame sauce + some herbs + chili oil + a bit of black vinegar . Shiok man!!!

My favorite selection are as follows:

Fish Glue

Sliced Fish

Sliced Pork fillet

Sliced Pork belly

Sliced Beef

Hand-made wanton

Fish dumpling

The various vegetables and mushrooms

So what's the damage?

Soup base: $5

Per person: $17.80/person

Wet Towel: 0.20/person

No GST.

Address: 22 Liang Seah Street, Opposite Bugis Junction.

After dinner, walk opposite to have dessert. If you have the dessert shop too crowded? Then just walk over and buy take-away. Eat it at the steamboat shop together with your food.

Verdict:

Soup base: Very good. If you can't take spicy, please order least hot. Don't be a hero.

Selection: Wide selection. However, sometimes it may run out of it and the boys may not tell you. If you keep on ordering it but it never appear, it means they have run out of it.

Environment: They have air-con but prepare to sweat. I LOVE IT!!!

Service: Messy. What do you expect? Very busy.

Sauce for dipping: Good.

Price: Reasonable.

Will I go back again? You say leh? I have been there so many times that they are willing to keep a table for me if I'm late. I will only bring my good friends there because, it is hot and they can't accommodate too many people to a table. Be prepared to eat in a super noisy environment.

Here's the link for the photos: http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/kennyleow3/TingYuanHotPotBuffet

Dim Sum in Singapore

If you been to Hong Kong, then you will know Singapore dim sum cannot compare to Hong Kong dim sum. Usually if you go late, there won't be nothing left. However, I will still encourage you to give it a try.

Your no. 2 choice will be the teochew porridge at the coffeeshop near the Henderson hawker center. All taxi drivers in Singapore will know how to go there. Just tell them teochew porridge at Bukit Merah View. Have you ever curse and swear that there are so many people and you have a hard time getting seat? If you are, you are not alone.
I live in Tiong Bahru area and thus, I would go to IKEA Alexandra with my wife when she needs to get something from IKEA Alexandra. We went to IKEA on Friday evening, which was the Good Friday. Wow man, there were so many people. Again, we were not able to find a seat. I just wonder, what happened to the old system? In the past, there would be a waitress at the entrance controlling the crowd and, there would be a couple of waiters or waitresses that would help us find seats. But now, this system is gone.

Since I wasn't feeling well and hungry, we decided to go to Anchorpoint to have dinner. Anchorpoint is just opposite of IKEA and it is linked by the overhead bridge. When we were there, we were pleasantly surprised by the new look. It is still under renovation internally, but there were many new shops setup.

On the first floor, we saw a couple of new restaurants:

TCC Coffee (not opened yet)

Jack Place

A Hong Kong Cafe (it used to be the food court)

A Japanese Restaurant

Secret Recipe

Subway (this Subway is big)

On the basement, you will find these:

Food Court

A stall in the center selling local coffee, tea and toast bread

Bengawan Solo

Polar Puffs

I think I saw a stall selling Roti Prata.

My wife and I had dinner at the Food Court. I had xiaolong bao and a chives chinese pizza. My wife had noodles. Our dinner were good. Not like other foodcourts. I think we will go back again when we go IKEA Alexandra.

Crabby Meal

It's so nice when you live one of the best food hawker centre in Singapore. When you reach there, just ask the local. They will tell you where to find the crabs. Well, that's the chilli crab on the left.

You want to see more crabs? You are staying in Raffles Hotel and you don't want to eat in the hotel. Good choice. So, where do you to eat? Here are the suggestions:

1) Roast Meat. That means our char siew, roast duck and chicken. From the hotel entrance, facing the main road, turn to your left and walk straight. You will reach a coffeeshop that is directly opposite the Shaw Tower. Try their all their roast meat stuffs. It's pretty nice. Try their soup of the day too.

2) Chicken rice. Let's say if you have to walk to the roast meat shop and you don't want to eat roast meat, then walk further up. You will reach a small road and turn left and walk 10 steps. You will see a coffeeshop selling chicken rice. Try that. It's good. I used to have lunch there while I was working at LTA Tekka Market.

3) Have you tried eating steamboat in Singapore? If not, from the chicken rice coffeeshop, walk all the way to the middle of the road. You should see a shop selling steamboat. The shop name is called Ting Yuan Steamboat. Try that in the evening. It's my wife and I favourite steamboat shop.

4) How about dessert? Well, just directly opposite the Ting Yuan steamboat is a dessert shop. Try anything in the shop.

5) If you want to try cheap and descent steak, you can try a Vietnamese steakhouse that is beside the dessert shop. I have a friend who likes to eat there. To me, it is so so only.

Nasi Lemak

There is so much good food in Singapore and sometimes, you will be confused what to eat during your free time.

This blog was created because of my new found friend at the airport. This is my first time knowing an American who loves Nasi Lemak!!! And so, this entry shall dedicates to his passion for Nasi Lemak.

Before I start, just a note to everybody. The Wang's Cafe at Terminal 2 Changi Airport does not serve nice Nasi Lemak. So do our proud Singapore Airlines. If you really wish to eat nice Nasi Lemak, it is everywhere in Singapore.

If you are in town, within the Raffles place and city hall MRT station, here are the recommendations.

1) Amoy Street Hawker Centre near Tanjong Pagar MRT station. Ask the station control on how to get to the Hawker Centre. When you at the Hawker Centre, walk to the staircase near the POSB atm. Walk up the stair to the 2nd floor and you will see a Nasi Lemak stall. Try that. It is good. I used to buy that Nasi Lemak for my customers whenever I'm near Amoy Street. Closed on Sunday.

2) Golden Shoe Hawker Centre near to Raffles MRT station. This is just right near my work place. It is on the 2nd floor. It is the stall number 14 on the 2nd floor. Closed on Saturday and Sunday and Public Holidays.Afterall, we don't work on weekends if our office is at Raffles MRT station.

3) Nasi Lemak at Killiney Kopitiam. If you are a tourist, take a cab there. Just tell the driver that you want to eat Killiney kaya toast at Killiney Road. They know the place very well. Now, I have to tell you the truth. Their nasi lemak has a history of selling out pretty fast. If you reach there and there is no nasi lemak, well, go for their kaya toast instead. It is one of the best in Singapore. If not, try their curry chicken too. Drink our local tea and coffee. You won't regret. Open everyday. Here is their URL. Go for the main outlet at Killiney Road.

More to come. I will take pictures in the future.
